And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep. Hosea 12:12
Hardly any book of the Bible where you won’t see the story of the Israelites’ ancestors being told at one point or the other, even in the Acts of the Apostles!
Now, at times, it is told to show a long line of proud and accomplished people while at others, it exposes their stubborn and recalcitrant nature.
The verse today shows Israel’s faithfulness and dedication to his business. He had a single purpose: to marry the love of his life. He served for 14 years to be able to call the woman of his dream his wife. He did it with all he could muster as character. God that told his story in this chapter to expose Jacob’s character shortcomings also rescued him by giving him a strategic business idea that turned his underdog position to that of strength after he was cheated by his father-in-law so many times.
The conclusion is usually that he was a deceiver; so, he deserved it. But what it tells us is that the father-in-law was a man without integrity. This speaks to how and with whom we do business. As the new work week starts today, you may need to review your business activities and your business partnerships.
The story may seem like a simple tale of a man that is love-struck and had to waste 20 years of his life trying to build a family from nothing. But we also see a tale of a man that weathered challenges and became the top dog by applying business lessons he learnt in the secret place of prayer.
But how do you access that secret place? You start by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour. That is the start of success.
Israel acknowledged his unworthiness of God’s mercy going by how he went with no investment save his dedication and faithfulness but came back with great profit. At times, these soft skills are enough to give you a turnaround if you focus on Him as your help.
As you go to the marketplace today, may you submit to His leading so that you can excel in your doings in Jesus name. Amen.
Jesus is Lord.
