And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this. Daniel 5:22
Being poor and being proud was the common disease of poor people.
However, looking at today’s scriptural focus, you see being rich and stupid sticking out like a sore thumb.
Daniel told the son of Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, the story of his life when he had the audacity to bring out the cups and other vessels that King Solomon made to honour God in the temple in Jerusalem to do a party with his people while honouring idols. The first commandment of not having any other god apart from the Lord God was violated. However, going as far as using items dedicated to the Creator of heaven and earth to honour them is a greater slap in the face. So, it is no surprise that He slammed a terrible judgement on the guy while in the throes of his stupid stunt.
As usual, the warning came beforehand. It came as a handwritten message which none of them could decipher until Daniel came. And I guess he was aware of the extent of this guy’s stupidity so he gave it to him straight. Not surprising that he didn’t spare the guy’s feelings. Belshazzar was alive when his father was humbled but he didn’t learn anything.
Imagine that his wife had to remind him that Daniel helped his father to interpret many difficult dreams and messages in the past. And for whatever reason, he became a joke while trying to fawn over Daniel when he arrived. His own results didn’t delay at all. That same night his end came and his kingdom was lost.
But you don’t need to wait to lose your place like Belshazzar before you learn true humility. It starts with a simple act of obedience to God and His instructions: Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour and you shall be saved.
Jesus is Lord!
May today bring you into the wisdom of what really matters in life so that you don’t find out when it is too late in Jesus name.
