But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Daniel 1:8
The first question that comes to mind is: how did Daniel know that he would be defiling himself by taking the king’s free and rich food?
Sincerely, if one considers the fact that he had strict training as a prince of Judah, it should not be surprising that he knew all about the fetish practices of kingdoms around them. It should also be clear from the later trajectory of his life in Babylon that he was a man of great sensitivity to his spiritual standing before God. Coupled with his great intelligence, rooted in his spiritual self awareness, one could see why he would not quickly fall upon free food when offered to him, even though so rich and inviting. He would rather take vegetables than food made with sacrifices to idols.
As much as Apostle Paul asked us not to ask such questions for conscience sake, is it also not wise for someone to be sensitive in their spirit about what they put in their mouth? If you want to put that food in your mouth and the Holy Ghost gave you a check in your spirit, it could be to avoid serious danger to your life, beyond merely keeping up a spiritual discipline. If you have the discipline in your spirit to obey that nudging always, it is in heaven you will understand how much safety net God had put around you right here on earth. May the Lord grant us understanding.
As such, today’s scripture speaks to our self discipline and spiritual self awareness. These brought Daniel and his friends into God’s favour, even in a foreign land where they were taken as captured slaves. I thought of this as the case of Kinta Kunte, but with a great spiritual grace that brought him into the palaces where he showed forth God’s glory.
The access to this space of God’s favour today remains the acceptance of the finished work of grace by the Lord Jesus Christ. Simply accept Him as your Lord and personal Saviour and you will be saved.
Wishing you a restful weekend and deep connections with your God and your family as you exhibit that grace of His favour over all you do this weekend in Jesus name.
Jesus is Lord.
