And if so be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings.
Jeremiah 26:3

When God is the one giving us the leeway, one wonders if people will be smart enough to take that chance. God sent Jeremiah to warn the people of Judah about their impending doom. And He told Jeremiah not to hold back from telling them everything He had told him to say. His hope for them is that they would hear the judgement coming their way and repent.

However, when Jeremiah was done speaking to them, we found instead that they threatened to kill him. He insisted that he had only come to deliver God’s message in full. Thank God for some sensible people there who pulled up history to let them know why committing murder against Jeremiah would be foolishness.

Indeed, people don’t like to hear bad things about themselves, even when they are busy confirming such things with their current bad behaviour. Nonetheless, the focus of today’s post is not them but God’s unending mercy and diverse opportunities to repent and change our ways.

He told Jeremiah to tell them the plain truth about the coming judgement just in case they would hear it, tremble at His words and do the right thing. This is why it appears sometimes as if God is ignoring the bad things we are doing. No, He is only giving us multiple opportunities to repent and amend our ways. Let us not take for granted God’s compassion. Let us change our ways and allow God’s mercy to shine forth in our situation.

First steps: Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour. He will show you the mercy you need to grow in His grace and obtain His glory.
