But afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and handmaids, whom they had set free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.

I watched a video recently of Dr Olumide Emmanuel saying that whatever you cannot let go as a sacrifice is having control over you. He was explaining about the difference between money and mammon as a spirit.
In today’s scripture, it was brought to the notice of the rulers of Jerusalem what their ancestors agreed with God over holding captive their fellow citizens, who had to become their servants, that after seven years, they were supposed to let them go free. Now, as it is common with many of us, we act impulsively in the heat of the moment. So, they granted their fellow citizens freedom and God applauded their noble move.
But you know what they did afterwards, they turned back and compelled those people they earlier released to return as their servants. Naturally, this pissed God off. He was so mad at them that He pronounced hash judgement on them once again.
This shows a classical case of the heart of man being evil. Why would you take a noble action and then round to change your mind? It shows that it was never a choice you made willingly.
God had always admonished us to act with discretion and not act foolishly before an angel, advising that why should you cut down your life span out of foolishness. These people did and got their just reward for it.
So, let’s be wise in our choices, words and actions. Act only out of conviction and understanding so that you don’t do something that will even turn God against you.
