Also the pillars of brass that were in the house of the Lord, and the bases, and the brasen sea that was in the house of the Lord, the Chaldeans brake, and carried all the brass of them to Babylon.
Jeremiah 52:17

When a Yoruba proverb says that the child you didn’t train will sell the house that you built, it seems far fetched, until it starts happening right before your eyes.

What has this got to do with today’s scripture? It means that building people to fear God is more important than constructing great buildings without the fear of God. When you can combine the two, it becomes a powerful tool for progress and development in any community.

The Chaldeans destroyed the great building built in honour of God in Jerusalem. This is not because God had suddenly become powerless but because the people had turned it into a source of pride and their demigod. They forgot the purpose of the building. They abandoned the building and even shut it up at a time to serve other gods. They even sometimes turned it into a place where they burned incense to other gods.

Indeed, if you have read the glory of building this great temple and the sort of careful planning and execution that went into it, reading today’s scripture and seeing the step by step dismantling of that edifice tells you that these things shouldn’t be the focus. The focus is to teach people to fear God enough that He would protect even this property dedicated to His name.

People that forget where they came from and God’s mercies that brought them there may eventually lose even that which they thought they have.

The safeguard is to be on God’s side all the time. The first step is to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour.
