THIS WORLD OF VANITIES

Dele Adeyanju

This world of vanities where kingdoms rise and fall without notice

Where heroes and heroines today become villains tomorrow

Where the shout of ‘’Hosanna’’ today becomes ‘’Crucify him’’tomorrow

Where sounds of celebration and lamentation occur simultaneously among neighbours

Where ‘’His Excellency’’ today becomes a prisoner tomorrow

Where the lust for power is quick to lift up and quicker to throw down

I tremble and bow; I salute with compliance and submissiveness

This world of vanities where humans toil from dawn to dusk without rest

Where Mammon and materialism take precedence above humanlife

Where envy and rivalry often snowball into assault and murder

Where men readily sacrifice their children and spouses for money

Where the reaper of one’s toil is at times even unknown to the labourer

Where people ‘’rise up early, sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows’’

I tremble and bow; I salute with compliance and submissiveness

This world of vanities where criminals are ‘’rewarded’’ with political posts

Where mediocrity is celebrated at the front seat and merit takes the back seat

Where fellow humans are slaughtered to gain political advantage

Where treasury looters are held high as heroes and messiahs

Where one’s birthright is readily sold out for ‘’a morsel of pottage’’

Where godliness and integrity are traded off for profanity

I tremble and bow; I salute with compliance and submissiveness

This world of vanities where one would play God in the affairs of others

Where pride blindfolds the unregenerate to the transiency of post and power

Where the scripture, ‘’God resisteth the proud’’ sounds nonsensical to the lost

Where the only hope of the oppressed is to ‘’lift up my eyes unto the hills…’’

Where a man threatens another without knowing his own last day is imminent

Where those at the corridors of power use the ‘’big stick’’ to torment the poor

I tremble and bow; I salute with compliance and submissiveness

May you and I be distinguished for Godliness in this world of vanities.

Happy New Year!
