This is to wish you the best of the year. The year had been awesome. God has done great things for us.
Indeed, the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ is being celebrated. The question is, how many people really understand the reason for Christmas.
Some state that it is rooted in the winter solstice festival rooted in pagan practice.
Some state that the time of His birth was really in October.
However, the important thing you need to focus on is why He came and not when He came. Many might have chosen to make merchandise of His coming. But without the true experience of why He came, they missed it.
I went to the market the day before to do my Christmas shopping. Ironically, the people I bought my grocery from were mostly Moslems as shown on their account names when I was doing bank transfers to them. Only two Christians were patronised by me. I am talking about this for two reasons:
- The lady who sold the live chickens to me later made me understand that her regular business is jewelry sales. Nonetheless, she sells the Christmas fowls every year as a matter of policy and habit. I then mentioned the awesomeness of it all that one was not afraid of being killed because they were celebrating Christmas. And she stated matter-of-factly that this is Lagos and such nonsense is not allowed. Sincerely, her simple answer seems true on the surface because really, growing up in Ibadan, all the festivals were celebrated by children without discrimination. We were all neighbours and lived as such. But who are the crop of politicians these days that feed on the blood of Nigerians to advance their political ambitions rather than serve the people?
- The lady who supplied canopy we set up in my house is a Moslem woman. She said that she hoped they could come and share the Christmas festivities with us and when she should come. We told her 12noon for the merriment to commence. That is also in order.
The question one should be asking then is: Why is there so much hatred now among Nigerians that causes so much kidnapping and killings around now? What went wrong?
It is obvious that most people lack the basic understanding that the reason Jesus came today was to save the world, you and I, from our sins, Matthew 1:21. This is the major reason for Christmas.
You can eat and drink all you want; if you miss this important reason why we celebrate Christmas, you miss it all.
