Indeed, I just thought I will like to share this today.
Why did I start to build my website by myself?
I must warn you that, as a creator, I love adrenaline whenever I have to create something new or have a challenge to tackle. However, website building was made to seem like a cult thing. I must confess that in the year 1999/2000 when I first had a close contact with computers, it seemed like a thing from the outer space. Being that I had always loved tech, a friend told me then that he was sure I would readily adjust to using computers. I wanted to believe him.
So, I enrolled for diploma in computer. While still testing ground, I got a job as a lecturer. But the scary part of it all was when the screen became blue one of those evenings I was touching the computer in the computer lab. I became worried that I had spoilt something. I told the guy in charge of the place that he should come to see the blank screen. He smiled and touched something and the system came on again. I heaved a sigh of relief that I didn’t spoil it. I assure you that I never went near it again.
However, I made up my mind that the only computer I would touch again would be mine. So, I saved up money and bought my desk top computer within a year or so. Of course, I didn’t want it spoiled but I had the freedom and unlimited access to experiment with mine
I always loved a challenge. So, I stayed up for nights to study the manual and learned to manipulate the system. Another propelling force for me was a seemingly impossible comment made by the vendor.
When he was going to buy it, and I had so many series of questions to ask him, he would patiently answer my questions. He then jokingly said that a day would come and I would probably know more about computers than him. I wondered if that was possible while I just laughed at what I thought was a joke he was making.
I can assure you that after some years, I was typing straight into my laptop. Even this blog post I am writing straight from my phone.
Maybe I have not gotten the skill or knowledge to be called a computer engineer, but I know enough to build my websites. I actually manage quite a number.
However, before I lose track of what motivated this post in the first place, let me mention that as much as I know that the guy also probably cheated me when he went to buy my first desk top computer, I have had some unpalatable experiences with website building vendors too.
Online coaches will tell you to pay for services; they may not be wrong in that advice. And I did pay for website builders twice. The first time was more than N100K. The second time I was charged N300K; and even was used as a marketing gimmick by the tech consultant.
However, in the two cases, my website grew obsolete and expired. I then went back to my free websites on WordPress to blog; before then, i even revived my Blogg site on Google. It all game me voice for a bit. However, the exciting and adrenaline that comes from being a creator it is for me.
So, here we are, building my websites with love and passion. It fulfills me. I enjoy the ‘wahala’. I guess no one can take that excitement away from me. Maybe I should begin to pay myself for the enjoyment I am getting from the DIY website building.
Or what do you think😁?
