It was with a rude shock that my husband woke me up early this morning. That is even considering that we just went to bed less than our earlier.
He got a distress call from the young man that stays with us. He went out to check on what was wrong and found he had been locked in his room. My husband asked him what was the issue. He asked my husband to open the door as he was locked in by the robber that broke into the flat.
My husband then went round the apartment to see if there was anybody. The young man then told him that the robber had gone. He showed him the window which the robber passed through.
My husband came back to the bedroom and I asked what was the issue. He said the young man said he had been robbed. So, I asked if this was when we had many people in the house during my husband’s inaugural lecture. He said that was not the case. He said I should come and see what happened. I went out with him.
That was when we saw the damages done to the house and the knives taken right from my kitchen to cut the mosquito net on the window. The clear thing was that the robber went through the window. As we were wondering how the person came into the house, we could not fathom how the person could climb to the second floor of an eight storey block of flats. Anyway, we called on the security guard for the block to inform him.
He noted that there was a footprint on the residue from the net. We also noted the hand print on the wall at the door to the young man’s room.
This reminded me of when we had a case like this when the children were around. Indeed, my husband told us then that there was no way anyone could have climbed into the flat despite our seeing marks of footprints on the wall by the study. He insisted that they must have left the door open as usual.
You see, the children were in the habit of leaving the door open. At times, I would just be woken up at night by the Holy Spirit to check the door and would meet that the door was left open. Sometimes, it could be my husband that would wake up to check. This frequency occurrence of leaving the door open made us conscious to always cross check the door every night. As such, we could not argue against his theory.
When the security outfit in Unilag called Alpha Bay too came to check at the time, their conclusion too was that there was no way anyone could have climbed through the window. That was the end of that matter then.
However, this is repeating itself this morning showed that there is a security breach the University needs to look into. The Block security guard then informed us that the other Blocks had their share of break ins sometimes ago. His conclusion is that this was the turn of our Block. Indeed, this is not palatable.
This becomes even more ironic because my husband refused to seek to move to the professorial quarters essentially because of the issue of security and the habit of the children always forgetting to lock the door.
Eventually, we saw the God is the only true security. We thank God that only the young man’s phone was stolen as the thief forgot to take the laptop he already picked in the living room. And God also be praised for no hurt came to him or us. Imagine if the guy had gotten ideas with the knives. God is faithful.
Below are the sights from the robbery scene.
